Why Do We Celebrate Children’s Dental Health Month?
February 2, 2024
American kids are bombarded by advertisements promoting sugary candies, cereals, and other treats that can cause tooth decay, and cavities are the most commonly found chronic illness in the children of the United States. If these dental infections are allowed to progress, they can lead to severe pain and interfere with how your child eats, speaks, and learns. Thankfully, Children’s Dental Health Month was established to help educate parents and children about the best ways for kids to take care of their teeth. Here’s how your child can celebrate the season with excellent oral hygiene!
How Can I Protect My Baby’s Oral Health?
The sooner you get your child started with proper oral hygiene habits, the better. Before your infant’s first tooth comes in, wipe their gums twice a day using a clean, soft cloth. This is best done after their first feeding and immediately before putting them to bed. This will wipe away food debris and bacteria that can cause gum disease and later tooth decay.
As the teeth start to emerge, brush them twice a day with a soft toothbrush and plain water, and start flossing as soon as they have two teeth next to one another. You should schedule your child’s first dentist appointment by their first birthday or when their first tooth comes in. Consult with your baby’s dentist about proper hygiene and what the future of their dental care might look like.
How Can I Keep My Child’s Teeth Safe from Cavities?
A child of speaking age should brush their teeth twice daily using fluoride toothpaste, but you’ll have to help them until they develop proper brushing skills. It’s a great idea to brush with them so you can observe and correct their brushing habits while modeling proper hygiene for them by practicing it yourself. It’s a great idea to use fluoridated tap water and ask your dentist about when is a good time to consider dental sealants.
Celebrating Children’s Dental Health Month this February is a great way to get your family on board with excellent oral hygiene. By teaching your child to take proper care of their teeth, you can set them up for a lifetime of good oral health while avoiding having to pay for costly restorative dental treatments.
