Your Family Dentist in Mesquite Lists Common Causes of Bad Breath

covering bad breathWe’ve all been there. You’re having a conversation with your coworker, and you’re trying to keep your distance because they have a distinct and unpleasant odor coming out of their mouth. Or, worse yet, maybe you’ve been the one with the bad breath, and no matter how many mints you chew on, the stink won’t go away. What causes this problem, and how can you fix it? Your family dentist in Mesquite is here to answer these important questions.

Food

Some foods, such as garlic and onions, are notorious for causing bad breath. Mints and gums can’t always help with this situation because the foods get into your blood stream, and the odor comes out through your lungs. Often, the only way to get rid of food-related bad breath is to wait it out.

Tobacco

Tobacco can dull your sense of smell and taste, so if you have tobacco-related bad breath, you might not even be aware of the problem! However, if others don’t get very close when you’re chatting, that’s a good sign that you should take steps to freshen up your mouth.

Chewing sugarless gum can help. The mint flavor may fight some of the smell, but the action of chewing will do even more. It will increase your saliva production, which will help to wash away some of the odor-causing bacteria in your mouth. Brushing your teeth after you smoke is also a good idea. Of course, quitting tobacco altogether is the best way to fight this type of bad breath.

Poor Oral Hygiene

If you do not thoroughly brush and floss your teeth (and clean your tongue), bacteria and food particles can easily build up in your mouth and cause bad odors. Poor hygiene can also contribute to oral health problems that cause bad breath, such as gum disease.

If you are doing your best to maintain a clean mouth, but you still suffer from bad breath, a visit to your dentist is in order. They’ll be happy to coach you on how best to clean your teeth, gums, and tongue, and they can treat gum disease if necessary.

Other Causes of Bad Breath

There are quite a few other possible causes of bad breath, including certain medications, some types of cancer, sinus issues, infections, and more. If you don’t know what is causing your problem, it would be wise to consult with your dentist. A thorough checkup may be able to reveal why your breath stinks and help you find a solution that will leave you with a confident, fresh-smelling smile.

Bad breath is a bummer, but you don’t have to let it ruin your social life! A few simple adjustments to your daily routine might be all you need to vanquish the stink.
