Experiencing Wisdom Tooth Pain? Call Your Pleasant Grove Dentist

January 1, 2018

Dental instrument holding an extracted toothIn most cases, your dentist’s job is to help you keep your teeth. However, there are some cases where removing a tooth is the best option to help you maintain your overall oral health. This is most often the case with third molars, wisdom teeth. These are the last teeth to erupt in the smile, and they can, unfortunately, cause some oral health issues. If wisdom tooth extraction is recommended, a skilled dentist can safely and comfortably remove your wisdom teeth to protect your smile.

What are Wisdom Teeth?

Wisdom teeth are the third and final set of molars. They typically erupt between the ages of 17 and 25. Our ancient ancestor ate a diet of coarse foods and didn’t perform regular oral hygiene, and this diet and lack of cleaning damaged teeth and could lead to early tooth loss. For these ancient humans, the third molars were necessary when they erupted later in life. Improved hygiene and a processed diet mean that we no longer need our third set of molars. That’s why they can often cause oral health concerns.

Why do You Recommend Wisdom Tooth Removal?

We will recommend wisdom teeth be extracted in the following situations:

  • There is inadequate jawbone to accommodate the additional teeth
  • Surrounding teeth are shifting out of place due to the additional teeth developing
  • Teeth have shifted too close together making proper cleaning difficult and changing the function of the bite
  • Wisdom teeth are impacted, unable to erupt
  • Wisdom teeth are damaging or adversely affecting surrounding teeth, gums, and oral tissues

How are Wisdom Teeth Removed?

Wisdom teeth can either be removed by “pulling” or surgical extraction. Pulling is when a metal clasping tool is used to grab the top of the tooth and shift it back and forth until it breaks away from the supportive gum and bone tissue. Surgical extraction is the more complex method. We’ll need to make an incision in the gums to expose the full tooth. Then, we can extract the tooth. We may also need to break the tooth into two or more smaller pieces to make it easier to fully extract the damaged tooth.
