You probably are aware that a twice-daily at-home dental routine helps prevent problems, but did you know that brushing alone removes only about 42% to 60% of the residue buildup on your teeth? That means you miss about half of it if you consistently skip flossing, which increases your risk of common oral issues such as cavities or gum disease.

Today, there are many options to choose from, so it’s not usually too difficult to find a floss that works well for you, but that hasn’t always been the case. Continue reading to learn more about how floss evolved over time!

When Was Dental Floss Invented?

Researchers have found evidence from archaeological sites suggesting that ancient people likely used different instruments, like pointed sticks or horsehair, to clean between their teeth or remove items lodged in their teeth or gums.

But string dental floss as a product wasn’t invented until after Dr. Levi Spear Parmly introduced the idea of using silk thread as floss around the year 1815. Then, in 1882, as the idea caught on, the Codman and Shurleft Company mass-produced the first unwaxed silk floss, though Johnson & Johnson patented it in 1898.

How Did Dental Floss Evolve?

Unfortunately, in the 1940s during World War II, the cost of silk rose, and because the material tends to fray easily, it became too expensive to continue to sell in bulk. As a result, Dr. Charles Bass created a version made from nylon instead, which tends to glide more easily over enamel and was easier to mass-produce.

Then, wax was introduced to the string to make it thinner and more durable. This option continued to gain popularity among patients and customers, and became a common household product in the 1970s, paving the way for dental floss as we know it today.

What is Dental Floss Like Today?

Now, many stores and pharmacies carry a variety of options to help clean between your teeth and below your gumline. Floss comes waxed or unwaxed and using different materials, and can even be minty, fruity, or have other palatable flavors.

But you’re not alone if you don’t like the way the string feels or if you struggle with manipulating it around your mouth. Thankfully, contemporary options, such as flossers with handles and oral irrigators, which rely on a pressurized stream of water instead, are popular alternatives to traditional floss that can help clean your smile.
