Treat Your Teeth Right: A Guide for Easy Denture Care
July 7, 2025

A tried-and-true method of replacing missing teeth is dentures. They are a reliable solution that gives you back the confidence to smile widely and eat more foods. Despite being a prosthetic, it’s still important to take great care of them. They are your new teeth after all! Here’s a quick guide on how to care for your dentures if you are new to the world of them or need a quick refresher.
Be Diligent in Cleaning Your Dentures
Just like natural teeth, the food you eat can get stuck in your dentures. Properly cleaning them will help stop any stains and keep them in good shape. Thankfully, it’s an easy process. If you don’t have a brush nearby, then you can simply remove your dentures and run them under lukewarm water. Make sure the water isn’t hot as it can affect the material and fit of them.
You should brush your dentures at least once a day. When it’s time to do so, use a soft-bristled toothbrush or a brush that’s specifically for this type of prosthetic. Clear, gentle hand soap can help remove any bacteria, but you can also use a denture cleaner. Regular toothpaste can be too abrasive, so steer clear of it.
While doing either of these, it may be hard to get a good grip because the material may be slippery when wet. Place a towel over the counter or fill the sink with water to act as a cushion.
Build a Habit of Soaking Your Dentures
Dentures are designed to stay moist, as this helps keep their shape. Since you will need to take them out during the night, you need to have them soaking by putting them in a glass of water or a denture-soaking solution. Not doing this will cause them to dry out and be more susceptible to breaking. When you wake up in the morning, be sure to give them a quick rinse.
Get Familiar with Their Fit
Over time, your gums and jawbone will start to change. This is natural, and it’s important to ensure your dentures have a good fit despite this. If they are loose or feel uncomfortable, then you may get sores or experience slippage while you are eating and talking. Your dentist will be able to reline them and get you back to a stable bite!
The good news is that caring for your dentures is easy! Remember these simple tips, and you can have them last you for years to come. You’ll be on your way to a reliable smile that gives you the boost in confidence you deserve.
