No Toothy Terrors: How to Avoid Dental Emergencies on Halloween

Halloween certainly involves eerie shocks, terrible terrors, and other spooky stuff. These can range from scary costumes and decorations to “haunted house” attractions and the like. Still, you wouldn’t want a dental emergency to be among the holiday frights; it’d just ruin your fun. The good news is that your Love Field dentist is here to help you prevent one. With that said, here are some ways to avoid dental emergencies on Halloween this year.

Eat Sweets in Moderation

As tempted as you may be, don’t binge on sweets and treats during Halloween. Having them in moderation makes urgent oral issues less likely.

Don’t forget that most candies are jam-packed with sugar. This simple carb is a big cause of tooth decay, as it attracts bacteria that rot your enamel. Eating Halloween sweets all day could thus cause painful cavities, disrupting your spooky celebration. Thankfully, you can avoid that by only having candy in small amounts at meal times.

Beware of Very Hard Candies

Aside from moderation, you should also consider the types of Halloween candy you have. Being cautious of tough kinds would keep your smile safer.

It comes down to hard candies’ unique texture. If you bite a lollipop, jawbreaker, or something similar too forcefully, you could easily chip or crack some teeth. Such injuries result in tooth sensitivity, forcing you to see a dentist for help. To ensure that doesn’t happen, make sure you only suck or savor your hard candies; don’t bite down on them.

Don’t Forget to Brush & Floss

You mustn’t neglect oral care due to excitement for Halloween. Unless you want awful oral issues that day, you’ll need to brush and floss properly on the 31st.

Indeed, you should brush twice and floss (at least) once during All Hallows’ Eve. By brushing your teeth in the morning and evening, you’ll keep holiday sugar from causing cavities and tooth infections. Similarly, flossing will remove harmful plaque and debris that your toothbrush could miss. Combining both practices would thus reduce your risk of a Halloween dental emergency.

See a Dentist Before Halloween

If you have the time, see your dentist before Halloween. Doing so can prevent a dental emergency from occurring on the holiday itself.

Dental checkups are the best form of preventive oral care available. When you get one, your dentist can diagnose and treat oral issues before they become harsh emergencies. That means a pre-Halloween dental checkup is great for you; it strengthens your smile so it can handle trick-or-treating without any problems.

The tips above are only a few ways to avoid dental emergencies on Halloween. For other “tricks,” please talk to your dental provider.
