Dental emergencies can happen when you least expect them, leaving you in pain and unsure of what to do next. While every situation is unique, some dental emergencies are more common than others—and understanding what to expect can ease your anxiety if you ever face one.

So, what are the most common dental emergencies, and how are they treated? Let’s take a closer look.

Toothaches

A severe, persistent toothache often signals an infection deep inside your tooth. This is one of the most common dental emergencies, and prompt treatment is crucial to relieve your pain and save your tooth. Your dentist will first examine your tooth to find the cause of your discomfort. Often, root canal therapy is needed to remove the infected tissue inside the tooth, followed by a dental crown to protect it and restore function.

Chipped or Cracked Tooth

A chipped or cracked tooth can occur from biting into something hard, a fall, or a sports injury. If you experience this dental emergency, rinse your mouth with warm water and use a cold compress to reduce swelling while waiting to see your dentist. Treatment typically depends on the severity of the damage. Small chips can often be repaired with dental bonding, while severe fractures may require a dental crown to restore the tooth’s structure and prevent further damage.

Knocked-Out Tooth

A knocked-out tooth requires immediate attention for the best chance of saving it. Carefully pick up the tooth by the crown (avoid touching the root), rinse it with water, and try to place it back in the socket. If that’s not possible, store it in a container of milk and head to your dentist’s office right away. Prompt treatment may allow your dentist to reimplant the tooth successfully.

Lost or Damaged Dental Restoration

If you lose a filling or crown, your tooth may become sensitive and more vulnerable to damage or infection. This is another common dental emergency that should be addressed quickly. Your dentist will assess your tooth and either reattach the crown or provide a new restoration to protect your tooth and restore your smile.

Soft Tissue Injuries

Injuries to your gums, lips, tongue, or cheeks can result in bleeding and discomfort. Rinse your mouth with warm salt water and apply gentle pressure to stop the bleeding. Depending on the severity, your dentist may need to clean the area and place sutures to encourage healing and prevent infection.

Don’t Wait to Get the Care You Need

Dental emergencies can feel overwhelming, but knowing what to expect and seeking timely care can make a significant difference in your comfort and treatment outcomes. If you’re experiencing a dental emergency, don’t hesitate to contact your dentist immediately.
